adminGovernor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has cancelled has cancelled the 10, 000 jobs in the State Civil Service approved by his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, saying a fresh recruitment process would be carried out.
Prior to leaving office, Wike had sanctioned the immediate employment of thousands of youths to fill vacant positions in the state’s civil service.
This decision was intended to address the workforce shortages swiftly.
However, Governor Fubara, during a stakeholder meeting in Port Harcourt on Friday, revealed that the recruitment was cancelled due to significant flaws and compromises in the process managed by Wike’s administration.
Fubara expressed his disappointment upon discovering that the names of selected candidates from the 23 local government areas were largely influenced by political favoritism.
He assured stakeholders that a fairer process would be initiated shortly.
Addressing inquiries about the job cancellations, Fubara explained, “Upon our review of the submitted names, it was evident that a majority, around 60%, were over-aged and selected through political connections. Our focus is on sustainable employment for the future. It is impractical to hire someone at 52 years old for civil service, considering the impending retirement age.”
In his remarks, Fubara emphasized his administration’s commitment to maintaining a solid social contract with the people of Rivers State, ensuring that governance remains transparent and effective.
Additionally, Fubara urged the Rivers State Waste Management Agency to enhance their efforts in keeping the city clean.
Represented by Dr. George Nwaeke, Head of Rivers State Civil Service, Fubara delivered this directive while receiving members of the RIWAMA Service Providers Association during their solidarity visit to the Government House in Port Harcourt.
