Ogun traditional ruler dies in UK

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has paid tribute to the late Towulade of Akinale, Oba Femi Ogunleye, lauding him as a distinguished leader whose impactful reign significantly elevated his community’s profile.

Oba Ogunleye, a prominent Nigerian journalist, passed away in the United Kingdom on Wednesday at the age of 79.

In a condolence message addressed to the Ogun State Council of Obas and the Akinale community, Governor Abiodun praised the late monarch for his contributions to the development of Ogun State following a celebrated journalism career.

“We deeply mourn the passing of Oba Femi Ogunleye, a venerable journalist and traditional leader who died in London at the age of 79. Oba Ogunleye was a towering figure in the media, dedicated to journalistic integrity and the pursuit of truth. As the Towulade of Akinale, he was a devoted monarch who worked relentlessly to advance his community and Ogun State.

“His remarkable career and altruistic service have left a lasting legacy. We offer our sincerest condolences to the Ogun State Council of Obas, his family, friends, and the Akinale community. May his soul rest in peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire future generations,” the statement read.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo also expressed his sorrow in a message conveyed by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi. Currently in South Africa for President Cyril Ramaphosa’s inauguration, Obasanjo shared his shock at the news, recalling that Oba Ogunleye had recently spoken to him about his travel plans, appearing to be in good spirits.

Obasanjo noted that Oba Ogunleye’s absence would be profoundly felt not only in Owu and Ogun State but across the nation.

Similarly, Senator Ibikunle Amosun remembered the monarch for his steadfast dedication to the development of Akinale, the Owu Kingdom, Egbaland, and Ogun State. He highlighted Oba Ogunleye’s significant role in fostering numerous positive developments in the community since his crowning in 2006, emphasizing his efforts to promote unity and peaceful coexistence among his people.
